Watching this film we found it reminded us of some other films: The obvious one is “The Talented Mr Ripley”. However, despite this, “Saltburn” does stand on its own two feet, principally because Oliver’s motives are ambiguous and, unlike “Ripley”, there is a vein of Comedy throughout.Scouser student Oliver (who is Irish) arrives at Oxford University where he sticks out like a sore thumb. Despite this he attracts the attention of a Home Counties aristocrat who takes him to his family’s stately country home where Oliver meets Felix’s family of stereotypical English aristocrats: vague mother, mad Father, nymphomaniac sister, american cousin, etc. At first even more out of place than he was at Oxford, oliver quickly becomes used to life at Saltburn. The principal actors do a fine job and the supporting players are gifted with enjoyable parts. Emerald Fennell and cinematographer Linus Sandgreen craft a gorgeous film of vivid saturation and striking imagery. Equally strong is Fennell’s screenplay which is hilarious, almost every scene has at least one memorable joke or biting line of dialogue. It is well worth watching.
