A slow moving, interesting psychological drama about the aftermath of a terrible crime – child sexual abuse.
As you can see we don’t agree with the negative reviews. This movie is based on subtext and doesn’t have an overt narrative that progresses like most films.
That being said, this is a very well done movie about adults who are really just children who never healed from their traumas and so what ensues is a vision of how life is when you ignore those things. Director Todd Haynes has a preternatural gift of turning towdry dishiness into something close to high art. Veering dexterously between social drama and black comedy, the 2023 film feels almost like Ingmar Bergman’s “Persona”. Riverdale star Charles Melton’s stellar performance is this year’s shocker.
The skillful camera works excellently captures the characters emotions, and a campy score that elevates the tension in the story. We highly recommend this movie.
