A charming, engaging and bittersweet film. The eA slow-burning crime film with a single-setting scenario in the American Rust belt, Yuma County introduces lovable one-dimensional characters (by design) until the plot becomes macabre fun and puts them in the most complex situations. With each new narrative development, the film’s game of cat and mouse grows more complex. Some people see the danger they’re in, while others are blissfully unaware. The second half of the movie is dark and hilarious, sad and unnerving with twists and turns worthy of a James Patterson novel, and soon enough it all escalates faster than you can say escalation. You can feel Quentin Tarantino’s artistic DNA coursing through this story. In short: One can see where the good ratings throughout come from. This is an enjoyable little gem of a movie that also doesn’t overstay its welcome.
