Rodrigo Caballero

Biography

Rodrigo Caballero began his musical studies at the age of 17. His first guitar instructor was his father, a popular musician who taught him his first songs, melodies, and harmonic progressions.

He completed a preparatory course at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the UAQ in his hometown, and then enrolled in the school of music at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He has participated in masterclasses with maestros Gonzalo Salazar (Mexico), Arthur Kampela (Brazil), VĂctor Villadangos (Argentina), and Pavel Steidl (Czech Republic).

Rodrigo has performed at venues including the Sala Carlos Chávez, Sala Blas Galindo, the Ollin Yoliztli School, Coyoacán Cathedral, the Diego Rivera Mural Museum, the Teatro de la República, the Tune Up! Festival (Berlin), Graal-Müritz (Baltic Sea), as well as various forums throughout Mexico.

He currently performs recitals that thematically combine the traditions of folk music from the American continent, the troubadour tradition, and the elements these expressions contributed to concert music for solo guitar — and vica versa. In doing so, he integrates two musical discourses, highlighting the importance of string instruments, whether plucked or strummed, in the shaping of Latin American music history.
