Event Description

Secrets & Lies is one of Mike Leigh’s most poignant and humanistic works, a compassionate and emotionally searing exploration of family, identity, and the wounds of silence. When Hortense, a successful Black optometrist, seeks out her birth mother after the death of her adoptive parents, the fragile equilibrium of a working-class London family is quietly and irrevocably upended.

Anchored by a devastating performance from Brenda Blethyn and the quiet strength of Marianne Jean-Baptiste, the film unfolds with Leigh’s signature blend of improvisation and deep psychological insight. As secrets are uncovered and long-buried emotions erupt, Secrets & Lies offers a rare and moving portrait of reconciliation, class, and the yearning to be known.

Winner of the Palme d'Or and Best Actress at Cannes, the film remains a triumph of raw, empathetic storytelling.

Following the screening, there will be a discussion with Amy Cotler.
