Event Description

Selected films at Teatro Santa Ana, La Biblioteca, every Wednesday in February

🎥Yeelen | 1987 | Dir. Souleymane Cissé
Mali / Burkina Faso | Mythic Drama / African Epic

📌In Bambara with English subtitles | Dur. 105 min.

Souleymane Cissé’s Yeelen (“Brightness”) is a landmark of African cinema—an epic drawn from the oral traditions of the Bambara people.

🎞Set in the precolonial Sahel, the film follows Nianankoro, a young man gifted with mystical powers who flees his father, a powerful sorcerer determined to destroy him.

Nianankoro’s journey across desert and savannah becomes a spiritual quest shaped by prophecy, ancestral spirits, and the elemental forces of nature.

The film explores generational conflict, the struggle for knowledge, and the weight of tradition, while offering a cinematic language that breaks from Western narrative forms.
