Inspired by the real-life story of Christiane and Gudrun Ensslin, Margarethe von Trotta’s landmark film follows two sisters whose lives diverge in radical ways: is a journalist committed to reform through dialogue, while Marianne joins a militant revolutionary group.

When Marianne is imprisoned and later found dead under suspicious circumstances, Juliane is left to confront the legacy of her sister’s choices, as well as the silence of a society unwilling to face its own complicity.

Von Trotta crafts an intimate yet politically charged portrait of women caught in the storm of history, blending personal tragedy with broader questions of justice, memory, and dissent.
