Event Description
Selected films at Teatro Santa Ana, La Biblioteca, every Wednesday in September
Black Orpheus | Dir. Marcel Camus
Brazil, France, Italy | Romantic Drama, Musical
In Portuguese with English subtitles | 107 min
Black Orpheus is a dazzling reimagining of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, set against the vibrant backdrop of Carnival in Rio de Janeiro.
Orpheus, a young streetcar conductor and gifted musician, falls in love with the shy Eurydice, who has arrived in the city while fleeing a mysterious pursuer.
As Carnival fills the streets with music, dance, and celebration, their romance unfolds under the shadow of fate, where love and tragedy become inseparable.
Breno Mello and Marpessa Dawn deliver memorable performances, while the unforgettable score by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfá gives the film its enduring rhythm, beauty, and emotional resonance.
Following the screening, there will be a discussion with Amy Cotler.
