Presented by Afrodega, the Black Cinema Series features two films on Saturday, June 6th: The Five Heartbeats and Dreamgirls.
The Five Heartbeats is a 1991 drama from the USA, directed by Robert Townsend. The film follows a rhythm and blues singing group as they rise and fall within the space of seven years.
Dreamgirls is a 2006 music film from the USA, directed by Bill Condon. The story follows a trio of Black female soul singers as they cross over to the pop charts in the early 1960s, while facing their own personal struggles along the way.
