🎥The Ballad of Narayama | 1983 | Dir. Shohei Imamura | Japón
In Japanese with English subtitles | Dur. 130 min.
The Ballad of Narayama adapts a centuries-old Japanese folktale about a remote mountain village bound by harsh laws of survival.
As resources dwindle, villagers follow the ancestral custom of ubasute: carrying elders to the sacred mountain of Narayama to die once they reach a certain age.
At the center of the story is Orin (Sumiko Sakamoto), a 69-year-old woman who prepares with dignity and resolve for her ritual departure, while her son (Ken Ogata) struggles with the brutality of the tradition.
