Biography:Famous Cuban pianist who holds the highest decoration awarded by UNEAC, has participated in several international jazz festivals.
Born on July 16, 1964 on the island of Cuba, where he began his music studies at the Luis Casas Romero Conservatory, in the city of Camagüey. He participated in classical music competitions at both elementary and intermediate levels. At an early age he began to be interested in jazz music and at the age of 15 he joined the group of the excellent singer Beatriz Márquez as director, where he recorded some albums and also received the award for best musical orchestration awarded by "La Empresa de Recordaciones y Ediciones Musicales (EGREM)", this record label being the oldest and most prestigious in Cuba.
Later he founded his own group called Fervor Opus, with which he participated in various international jazz festivals such as Montreal (CA), Montreux (Switzerland), Jamboree in Poland, Jazz Fest in Yugoslavia and the Danube Festival. During this time, he was part of the project of New York jazz and blues singer, León Tomás. Also at that time he played with the legendary Dizzy Gillespie. Later, he joined groups such as Miguel Escalona and the Maravillas de Florida Orchestra, among others. The Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) granted him the title of member of the list of personalities of Cuban Art and he is a member of the commission for the evaluation of artists in Cuba.
Gabriel Hernández has shared the stage with figures such as Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Ray Charles, among others. In addition, he has participated as a pianist for artists such as Gene Perla, Tito Puente, Bob Sheppard, Roy Hargrove, Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D'Rivera and Greg Fishman. Currently, in addition to his career as a jazz soloist pianist and with his quintet, he was invited to join the renowned group Afrocuban All Stars, directed by Maestro Juan de Marcos. He was also a pianist for Cubanismo, an orchestra directed by Maestro Jesús Alemany, with whom he has performed various concerts in the United States, Canada and Europe.
