"Departures" cuenta la historia de Daigo Kobayashi, un violonchelista que pierde su trabajo y se muda de nuevo a su ciudad natal con su esposa Mika. En su lucha por encontrar trabajo, Daigo responde a un anuncio de lo que cree que es una agencia de viajes, pero resulta ser una funeraria especializada en el ritual tradicional japonés del "ataúd", en el que se prepara a los fallecidos para la cremación.
